When is the last time you backed up, performed a virus scan, or updated your operating system?  If you are like most individuals, the answer is probably "not lately".  Relying on employees to perform these essential tasks can be disastrous to a business, resulting in reduced productivity, security holes, and data loss.

The Problem

When was the last time you backed up your PC?, ran a virus scan?, or changed your password?  If you are like most people, the answer to all of these questions is probably "not lately".  Do you regularly leave your system logged in when it is unattended? Has your PC recently suffered an attack by a virus or worm? Have you done anything about it?  We all know what we should do to keep our PCs productive and secure.  However, very few of us follow through on a consistent basis.

Backing up, updating, and monitoring multiple stand alone devices is costly and time consuming.  IT and related costs often represent a significant portion of unplanned spending for many smaller organizations.

Traditional desktop and laptop computers require almost constant care and fine tuning to keep applications running smoothly and to prevent data loss.  Without regular operation system, application, and security updates, users will quickly complain of reduced performance, system crashes, and data loss.

Most businesses also do not realize that these devices represent the single largest security risk for an organization. Because these devices have USB ports, CD drives, and memory card slots, it is very easy for employees and clients to copy and redistribute confidential information, add unsanctioned programs, and change system parameters.  This can result in lost business, bad publicity, and even legal problems.

Classroom environments can be even harder on traditional PC and laptop devices - exposing them to all sorts of abuses on a daily basis.  There is also the risk of exposing students to unwanted content.

Perhaps the harshest environment for PCs is the manufacturing floor.  The typical operating life for a standalone PC if it is not protected is often less than a year.  Devices are often exposed to poor air quality, wide variations in temperature, and numerous physical abuses.  PCs are also often placed in locations that are not closely monitored, leaving the door open to unauthorized activity and data access.

Are there alternatives to the above that will improve performance, reduce cost, and enhance security?  The answer is an unqualified YES!  Most Pc's are idle 99% of the time and operate at < 10% of capacity even when a user runs a demanding application.  New technology takes advantage of this unused potential allowing traditional desktop computers to be replaced with a small appliance or "Thin Client" that is attached to the back of a traditional LCD monitor along with a keyboard, mouse, and speakers to provide a robust and familiar user experience and performance.  These devices have no fans, operating systems, or drives to reduce reliability or create opportunities for security breach.  Each user also has there own personal environment (files, desktop background, desktop, etc. all can be personalized and are protected from other users)

These devices also take advantage of todays ultrafast multicore processors and allow 10 or more (up to 30 in some cases) devices to share a single PC.  The advantage of this approach is several fold.

By using one PC to replace several stand alone desktops, it becomes very straight forward to:

- Update the operating system and application software (only required once)

- Perform regular backups (only one device to backup and monitor)

- Prevent damage and abuse (device resides in a protected location.

 - Only applications that are sanctioned by the business can be loaded on the system

- Establish robust security policies and protect against malicious software.

- Reduce overal IT and IT energy related costs by up to 70%. (Thinclient cost is < 1/3 the cost of a typical PC)
